The race was marred by the death of the Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger in a crash during qualifying. The next day, during the race itself, the world witnessed one of the darkest moments in Formula One history when Ayrton Senna, the three-time world champion, died tragically after a crash on the seventh lap.
